WhatsApp Web finally lets you place audio and video calls
Prior to joining Android Police, Oberoi worked on feature stories, reviews, evergreen articles, and focused on 'how-to' resources.
Additionally, he informed readers about the latest deals and discounts with quick hit pieces and buyer's guides for all occasions.
Oberoi lives in Toronto, Canada. When not working on a new story, he likes to hit the gym, play soccer (although he keeps calling it football for some reason🤔) and try out new restaurants in the Greater Toronto Area.
All the way back in April of last year, we reported how WhatsApp was hard at work, developing calling functionality for its web client. Well, a little under a year later, that functionality is now starting to land for some WhatsApp users.
For those unaware, WhatsApp's computer clients, including the apps for Windows and Mac, have had audio and video calling support since 2021. The web client, which launched in 2015, remained the odd one out for over a decade.
The platform's 'lite' tag, however, is finally going away now. The messaging giant has finally started rolling out native audio and video calling support directly to WhatsApp Web, as highlighted by the folks over at WABetaInfo.
The functionality, which hasn't rolled out to all just yet, is allowing some to make one-to-one calls. Group calling functionality will likely arrive next.
WhatsApp Web calling is a familiar experience
Calling on WhatsApp Web works exactly like it does on the platform's Windows/Mac apps. You simply head to a conversation and tap the call button on the top right. You then decide whether you want to initiate a voice call or a video call.
Additionally, calls placed via WhatsApp Web carry the same level of protection, which means they, too, will be completely end-to-end encrypted using the Signal protocol.
The development also brings Screen Share functionality to video calls, which will function exactly like WhatsApp's desktop apps.
It's worth noting that calling for WhatsApp Web is currently only rolling out to those who have signed up for the WhatsApp Web beta program. It should head to stable WhatsApp Web users in the coming weeks.
