ChromeOS has its days numbered, as Google is currently working to replace it with a full-fledged Android desktop OS. Rumor has it that a preview of the alleged operating system from Google will be available as a preview this year. Time will tell if that happens, but what now appears more certain is the company offering new ways to access Gemini on Android's upcoming desktop interface.

As first spotted by 9to5Google, evidence has emerged that now points to a new Gemini experience on the upcoming Android desktop. While it doesn't appear to be radically different from the Gemini experience on the existing Chromebook Plus devices, it seems to be aiming to improve Gemini's usability on Android desktop OS.

Android desktop OS is readying a new way to launch Gemini

9to5Google has found a pair of strings on the Google app beta (version 17.5), clearly suggesting that Android desktop will have a "Gemini icon" in the "top right corner of your screen." This appears to be the same one that appeared alongside the status bar icons in the leaked video of the Android desktop OS.

However, this won't be the only way to launch Gemini on the Android desktop OS. The strings also suggest that the Android desktop OS will allow users to press the Google Key + Space on their keyboard to launch Gemini. You can take a look at the code strings below.

Support for the keyboard shortcut isn't surprising because you can press the Search + Google Key icon on the keyboard to launch Gemini in Chrome. If Google manages to materialize this, it won't be something we haven't seen before. For example, Siri on macOS has a similar shortcut icon on the Menu bar. Now, Google is trying to implement the same idea on the Android desktop OS, though it should be better than what Siri offers on macOS.

In a job listing on LinkedIn last year, Google said that its new desktop operating system will have AI at the core, so we are expecting more interesting stuff related to Gemini in the OS. We may also get a glimpse of some of it before Google launches the first preview of what's currently codenamed "Aluminum OS."

It'll be interesting to see if we get a Pixel Chromebook with a dedicated physical key to launch Gemini.
